You Have the Job: What to Expect in Your First Weeks

Congratulations! You’ve landed the job you applied for. That initial sense of excitement can quickly be joined by nerves, questions, and even a little overwhelm. Starting a new role is a big transition, but knowing what to expect can make it a lot easier to settle in and shine.

During your first few weeks, most workplaces will focus on onboarding. This includes learning the company culture, understanding your responsibilities, and getting to know your team. Expect a period of adjustment as you figure out new processes, meet new colleagues, and start to manage your daily tasks. It’s normal to feel a little unsure at first. Remember, everyone was new at some point and it takes time to find your rhythm.

Many roles also include a probation period, which is usually the first three to six months. Probation is a trial period for both you and your employer to ensure the role is a good fit. While your employer is assessing your performance, you also have the right to know what is expected of you, receive feedback, and ask questions if something is unclear. Probation does not mean you have no rights. You are still entitled to fair treatment, workplace safety, and, in most cases, notice periods if your employment ends.

To make the transition smoother, keep communication open with your manager and team. Ask for clarification when needed, set achievable goals for yourself, and try to focus on learning rather than being perfect. Small habits, like arriving on time, being organised, and showing initiative, go a long way in making a positive impression.

Starting a new job is exciting but can also feel challenging. By understanding what to expect, respecting your rights during probation, and giving yourself time to adjust, you can confidently settle into your role and start building your career.
